Some of you may know who Shel Silverstein is, some of you may not; but I dare say that most of you have come across his works at least once. I, also had read one or two of his poems prior to date, but never went in depth on his works. Today, as I was scrolling through (binging on) Pinterest, I saw one of his poems and then, one thing led to another (as always) and I found myself reading about a dozen of them. I save my flattery for special works and his is one of them.
Shel Silverstein poems many categorize as “Children’s genre” but I wouldn’t say I agree. The manner with which his simple words echo even in the mind of an adult is amazing. His poetry is welcoming for all ages. It speaks of life in the simplest words (I see why they categorize it as- for children), you find yourself nodding subconsciously in agreement to the lessons his poetry speaks.
And well, if you happen to have kids that love poetry, I would totally recommend his poetic works. He proves again and again that you don’t need big flashy words and metaphors (that many wouldn’t understand) to make a beautiful poem.
In case you think I am all words and no action, here are a few of his works or rather my favorite from among his poems. I believe you’ll fall in love with them too.

SIlverstein is considered a children’s author because adults often forget how important messages like his are…imagine a world of ‘grown ups’ that lived the motto “Anything can happen child, anything can be”. I would share my favorite, but you already did 🙂

I have loved Shel Silverstein since I received his book Where the Sidewalk Ends for my eighth birthday. His works are timeless and know no age limits. Love this post! 🙂

I think you and I are poet twins. He is also one of my absolute favourites spanning from the time I was 6 years old. There is a poem Where The Side Walk Ends, it’s my favorite. I also liked the one you put up about happy endings.

I had always wondered if I had a Twin somewhere :D. I really like the happy endings too. I think I’m the only one who has only recently stumbled upon his works. Haha, I will check out the ‘sidewalk’ poem. Thanks!

Love Shel! He has a special place in my heart for my brother loved him too! I got my brother’s book Where the Sidewalk Ends when my brother died. A friend of my brother’s actually shared 2 of his poems at the Memorial Service for my brother. Remember the spitting from the 22nd floor one 🙂 and now I have to go get the book to remember the others! I will have to go to Pinterest and read and yes I Love the Listen to the Mustn’ts…..and the Happy Endings made me smile for I remember you saying how you don’t write happy endings 🙂 One day you will 🙂 Thanks for sharing! Awww, I see how it means a lot to you. I should get ‘where the sidewalk ends’ for my lil siblings everyone is talking about it. You should check it out on Pinterest, there are some really beautiful poems and quotes there. That’s where I get a lot of my inspiration. My Pinterest name is “kaygy0609”. And you remembered! :). Still working on it you know, the happy endings. 😉

As an Australian, Shel Silverstein isn’t very well known here so I was thrilled to stumble across his book: “The Giving Tree”. That’s really spoken to me as a parent. Sometimes, you feel your kids are going to keep taking until you’re nothing but a stump with nothing left to give.
From there, I bought a few of his books of verse and also another storybook. Could be called: “odd”? It was very poignant.
