Flash Fiction: Survived

Flash Fiction: Survived

image

Sleep was supposed to be an escape for the soul, but not for Anita. Not after March 25th, the night she found herself victim to an eccentric looking man with green eyes who although immune to emotions, was a master of facade; a man who’d cut short the lives of seven innocent girls before her… She should have been number eight.

Anita had tried everything, therapy, meditation, you name it but still, each time she shut her eyes, the memories come gushing in blurry flashbacks with only one clear cut frame amidst the chaos- A red chandelier. Shutting her eyes, took her back to that moment, when she’d stare at the chandelier, the only thing with color in her hunter’s den, trying to gate the pain and fear off.

But she’d survived then and would survive facing him in court the next day, with or without sleep on her side. She was ready.

On being lonely-

On being lonely-

image

And she said, I’m going to be lonely,
There’s no one that can handle my tides;
She was echoing the words of her family,
Who’d imprinted in her- she’s too wild.

She had silenced the sound of her laughter,
And glided with- the sway of her hips;
She smiled without showing her fine teeth,
And chewed with her lips tightly sealed.

She dressed with the label- appealing,
For the family approved of it;
And it was only under the night’s Blanket,
She found the glimmer to be real.

Who’s to say that you’re going to be Lonely,
When your fate has been crafted and sealed;
It’s been written by the best of writers
And he’s designed you to be unique.

A- Absolute day

A- Absolute day

image

The darkness, which had enveloped the sky gradually dissipated. She gazed as a distinct violet hue of varying intensity made an appearance. It’s lightest shade, meshing with the sky’s cerulean blue, producing together a color calming to view.

She watched entranced, as the tall mahogany tree leaves shuddered to the Northeastern winds and just as if they realized her gaze upon them, turned still except for the occasional sidewards swaying.
The chirping birds filled the atmosphere with their melody, giving the picture perfect scene a bit of background music.

And in that moment, it didn’t matter if the skies would clear and turn a scorching 115 degrees in a few hours; it didn’t matter that the North-Eastern winds would pick up, forming turbulent sand storms; it didn’t matter that the birds chirping would eventually overstay their welcome and get on her nerves. There and then, the day seemed Absolute… Complete… Perfect… Free from imperfections. The odds that it would turn out so were a billion to one. But all that mattered was, in that moment, she believed in it’s absoluteness.

1 down, 25 more letters to go. Thank you @Life home and away for suggesting the word “Absolute”. I promise I am not ignoring your posts, comments and follows on purpose. My phone’s screen got cracked and it’s at the repair shop, hoping to get it back by tomorrow. Currently using my sister’s not-so-good hotspot which I totally appreciate 😁. My apologies.

“Those days”-

“Those days”-

image

There are days,
When
The weight of the burden
Of the world,
Seem to fall
On two frail shoulders;
Days-
When the effort it takes
To smile
And pretend
Seem more,
Much more,
Than one soul can bear;
Days-
When to utter
Soft words
Is a feat impossible.
When reality,
Life-
Seems like
a dark cycle
With no silver lining.

Trudging,
Sailing through
Those muddy days,
Makes one
Nothing less than a warrior.
And when all’s said
And done-
You fought,
Scar and all,
Hold your head up
And strut,
Like the Warrior you are.

Writer’s Quote: Kahlil Gibran

Writer’s Quote: Kahlil Gibran

image

The theme for this week’s writers quote is “Wisdom“. It was a befitting choice personally for me, cause I’m currently reading a poetic prose book which I would say is full of wisdom. The book in question is, Kahlil Gibran’s “The prophet”.

At first, I tried to binge read it and get to the end but quickly realized, this wasn’t that kinda book. The prophet, is the type of book where you read a chapter, drown in the beauty of the words and pause at the end to let the all too clear message sink in and resonate with your soul.

Kahlil Gibran talks about majority of things pertaining to our daily lives in his book. Each chapter is dedicated to a struggle- pain, joy, family, love, passion, work and a whole lot more.

The quote above is a passage from the chapter where he writes about friendship. To think that this book was released in the year 1923 and here we are, almost a century later and his words are living on and inspiring. I guess, that’s the beauty of writing. It has no expiry date, it simply lives on…

She was beauty-

She was beauty-

image

She tried to find the beauty,
People claim, in her they see;
That light which brightens hearts,
And set some souls ablaze;
She stared at her reflection,
With every waking dawn;
And spent the day dejected,
Cause the light, she never saw;
But the beauty was embedded,
In the window of her teeth;
In the way high voice rose high,
When she fluttered at her speech;
In the tightening of her lips,
When she hears of injustice;
In the widening of her eyes,
At the sound of Poetry;
She tried to find the beauty,
People claim in her they see-
In her soul, it was embedded
In every cell of her being.

Liberation-

Liberation-

image

I see you conceal dark circles
And apply your mascara,
I hear you silence your sniffles
With pillow every night,
I see you cover with henna
The bruises on your arms,
But I know, oh mother
Who the knight Is In the battle.

He calls you names like lousy
Scarring you with his venom,
And he claims he does love you
Body and soul, fist and punches,
You take his storm and thunder
Shielding us under the weather,
Love and mercy go hand in hand
And his is just one sided.

He exposes your errors
Shaming you even in public,
And you shrink with every word
Antagonizing your existence,
And your kids are your solace
To us, you are a temple,
You’ve been fighting this battle
We say- it’s time you retire.

He can’t hurt you anymore
For your kids will be your armor,
And the patience you practiced
From your lord will be your reward,
Take one step into the pathway
There’s a whole world beyond this,
It is time to break the shackles
And step into liberation.

Of the darkness-

Of the darkness-

image

I know the darkness is consuming,
And the cracks are fit too tight,
For the golden rays to traverse,
Illuminating whats inside.
I know the smooth road’s more inviting,
Cause you’ve roughed most of your life;
And though seasons change from summer
to winter, the darkness stays constant.

I know these things cause I’ve lived that life,
When dusk and day are alike;
When the tear drops from the heavens above,
Mix with those from your eyes.
When the incessant battle in your head,
Reflects in the black you adorn;
And you bite your tongue each time the words,
I’m fine slips from your mouth.

I know the darkness is consuming,
And the light seems far away;
But I’ve been there and I tell you-
It’s a long journey with spiral corks,
Which in the end, the path will straighten,
Though you doubt that will come true;
But only so much darkness can circle around,
Before inevitably, the light shines through.

Someone like you-

Someone like you-

image

Show me- the parts of you,
Living in- the depth of wounds;
The scars hidden from all to see,
Show me your soul, your zeal to live-
For there is someone like you, in me.

Save the small talks and pleasantries,
Speak to me of- the thoughts that keep;
Those memories- which haunt your dreams,
The galaxies you’ll love to visit-
For there Is someone like you, in me.

When the miles, our worlds divide,
And vocalization wouldn’t suffice;
Read the words, with my heart I write,
And know Alone- you’ll never have to fight.
For there is someone like you..
