Day 7: Breaking Free

Day 7: Breaking Free

image

He moved halfway across the world,
To ease a dullness in his chest;
A yearning, in every cell of his bone,
Staying home, could not suppress.

The moment, he grew up into the ranks
of men, he packed and left.
Leaving folks back home, going grey wondering,
What insanity provoked such an act.

But some souls are born to wander
The wilderness, and the far out sea;
Soak in rays at the top of a mountain,
Live amidst-nature’s beasts.

Gain knowledge only experience can offer,
Fill their lungs with nature’s breeze;
For the only way, for them to figure out,
Who they are- is by breaking free.

prompt: Inspired by (DecemberPoetryChallenge). Today’s poem is inspired by a quote of Chinua Achebe– “Nobody can teach me who I am. You can describe parts of me, but who I am, what I need, is something I have to find out for myself”.

  1. Really nice! It’s so true…there are some people that just need to leave and explore what is out there for them. Everyone is different in their approach to satisfying their quest for knowledge and happiness.

  2. Ameena you’ve been writing some amazing poetry in this month’s challenge. I’m sorry I’m not able to to commenton it all. I enjoyed this one a lot, maybe I could relate to it. I’ve always wanted to just break free of my health difficulties and travel all over Europe and some other places.

    Some friends of mine from university who married, took a year and travelled all around the world for a year. I followed them on FB they went to some amazing places. Even places where the women had to wear head scarves all the time and I’d be a bit afraid to go, but she had her husband so I guess it was fine then. Love your poetry and your writing as always 🙂 Keep up the great work!

    1. Oh I know what you mean Mandi. I had the opportunity to travel to a different country for University and that change was absolutely what I needed. It was a turning point for me.
      Hahaha, I actually do put on a head scarf all the time. It’s really nothing.

      1. No you probably are used to it. I hope you get to wear pretty ones, not only black. I see women on the subway etc with such beautiful ones. Yes, travelling is great, in my future plans 🙂
