Society’s Impositions-

Girls don’t do that,
She was imposed as a child;
Wipe off those tears,
And replace with a smile;
Disheveled head,
Was a sin in their crowds;
Right from her start,
She was trained to disguise.

She mastered the talent,
Of a face behind a smile;
Hid imperfections,
It was a sin in their crowd;
Bottling up emotions,
Was the only way to live;
Hiding her Brains,
Her job was to be pretty.

And with the sun rose,
An actor ready for the part;
And when the night fell,
Her demons-they befriended her;
For the light brought with it,
A part, society had imposed;
And darkness was a relief,
To the face behind the glam.

Girls don’t do that,
They imposed as a child;
And now they wonder,
Why her sheets are soaked at night.

  1. I think you make a great point your lovely poem Ameena. Girl’s are trained to be a different way then boys, to act, and react differently. Your poem speaks very well to the fact that girls are often told to keep in inside to not let what’s bugging them show on the outside. Or we are ‘bitching’ or complaining and nagging. Self-expression, to let your emotions out it is important whether you are male or female. And I think that many writers such as Virginia Woolf testify to that. Great poem.

    1. Thank you very much Mandi. It’s sad to see that we are in the 21st century but yet so many practices such as assigning roles are still in play. They forget that, self expression is actually healthy.

    1. Thank you! I’m glad you love it. I wrote the male’s first actually but didn’t like how it turned out. Maybe I should just post it like that.

  2. Oh yes yes yes yes this is so sad and so true and so relatable.
    It’s tragic actually that we were raised in these horrible ways. Remember when we were made to feel guilty when we were dark skinned? When skin lightening creams were gifted to us?
    Because somehow it’s our face that matters more than our hearts and brains. Somehow cleaning and cooking is more important that our talents and passions?
    Just because we were born women?
    I’m so gonna raise my daughters like queens.
    I will teach them that their heart is beautiful and that they are intelligent and that these are the best compliments to get. I will make them try harder for intelligence and purity of heart than for the color of their skin or their silent suffering of being women.
    They will be greater than what society wills us to be.
    They will be queens.

    1. I hear ya, Loud and clear!! All those roles assigned to us by society is just unfair. Kids should have the right to decide who want they want to be without society making them feel guilty for their choices. Here’s, to raising our daughters as queens and raising our sons to treat everyone rightly.

  4. Some things have changed over the years, but a lot stays the same and probably always will. There is a saying….”boys will be boys” ….as if to say, it’s excusable. Why can’t ….girls be girls? Great post.

  5. Great stuff and beautiful words. Mr Midnight, from the blog entitled “Gilmours Nice Place” also says that “boys don´t cry”and “an indian knows no pain”. Sir Winston often wonders why humans make their lives so difficult with such “nonsense” floating around their heads. I have to agree with them both. Best wishes from the Black Forest. 🙂
