Writer’s Quote: Daphne Du Maurier

I was talking to an old friend today and explained how I wanted a two weeks break from school and stress without having to make any plans or be compelled to visit anyone. Just me, with my girls and our books and cups of tea, chilling, relaxing and watching episodes of criminal minds. He didn’t get it.

There is a certain contentment, an aura of calmness, when you’re with the ones you love and doing what you love to do- reading and writing; many people I have come across don’t understand it, but the truth is, it is NOT for them to understand. We’re happy, relaxed and for a few days, enjoying the silence, isn’t that all that matters. They assume it is a boring life, but actually, there is nothing more interesting than being with like minded people, surrounded by books and stories with amazing characters or challenging one’s self creatively.

Happiness isn’t defined by luxury, it is a state of mind- whether in a glass house or in wooden one. I once read, a few years back that Poets are sad people. For a while I believed it; but now I’ve come to realize just because some write-ups are fueled by sad emotions doesn’t mean ‘current sadness”. Writing it out is just like crying, letting the negativity out in order to create space for the happiness yet to come, and to me that’s not being sad; that’s dealing with life.

Cheers to everyone who enjoys reading and writing either in luxury or simplicity. This world is big enough for both categories.

  1. This is absolutely the best post ever! I love how you define your down time. I could not agree with you more! I so love when you say:

  2. This is absolutely true… There is nothing more interesting than being with like minded people, and doing what we love to do. And you said it right, dear… Happiness is a state of mind, not a luxury!!
I just loved reading your post. Great my dear! 🙂

      1. Hi Ameena – Your solitude will bother those people who cannot see that you have the same rights as they have. i.e. They probably do what they want, but some how expect you to adjust your life to accommodate them. In my experience, this is sometimes just selfish lack of thought but, in most cases, it is just that they have never tried to see the world from someone else’s perspective. Have a wonderful time over the holidays. 🙂

  3. Then I happily take the life of boredom. You are right it is not for other people to understand the chillax life but for you to inhale and exhale and let it go. For my experience because I do not go to clubs or shopping every weekend, I get the she has 6 heads looks. I have learned to give a look, smile and move on. Enjoy your weekend Ameena and have fun jut chilling out.

  4. Really love this write up. I don’t think loud extroverted people understand introverts very well. My Godfather I guy I love a lot talks and talks and talks. But he is the only one I know he understands he says we do the same thing as him. But, We talk and process inside our head instead of out loud . I also have a friend who is extremely outgoing and loves to be the Center of attention. She doesn’t “get” shy people she told me once. I always wished I could be loud. But now I have discovered quite is a very good place to be. Nice job!

    1. Many times, they don’t. Quiet is a wonderful place to be. I don’t know I belong to because, I could be the life of the party when I’m out but still, i dont enjoy. Through the smiles, I’d rather just be at home, resting and relaxing.

  5. Some of the most boring things to some people, are the most sought out ones for other people. I love the saying…..”stop and smell the roses” ….life is in constant motion and it is so enjoyable to just take things easy, relax, and truly enjoy life and being around those you enjoying being with and sharing some time together doing things together. Wonderful post. 🙂

  6. Couldn’t agree more on this. My best memories with my friends whom I trust that they understand me are having tea or coffee , discussing life’s issues or sometimes doing our own stuff without even talking just acknowledging the presence of each other….and enjoying the silence.I think our hearts are in comfort zone around them and we feel at peace 🙂 and peace is silent not loud ..
