It’s the same everyday. Uncle Jim would walk out the door with his 1960’s suitcase and old man cap. Lock the door and turn the knob twice, look around to make sure the road is clear, then turn the knob a third time. I always wondered why he did that, grandma says, “that’s just his way of doing things”.
He’d walk across the street, say hello to grandma, hand me a sweet and ruffle my hair with the biggest smile on his face while I pretend to drown myself In a book. He’d return to his side of the street, wipe the bicycle seat three times, seat on it and head to wherever he goes off to every morning.
Uncle Jim was a man of repetition and that baffled me. He’d always do the same things a specific number of times and I asked Grandma why, as usual, she said “that’s just his way of doing things”. I’ve resolved to accept Grandma’s answer until I can come up with a better one myself through mere observation.

Wonderful story Ameena! Sounds like he has OCD. I wonder if that is what she has come up with from her observations. Great story! Leaves the reader wondering…

Great job on the prompt. Your story was well written and interesting. If you have ever seen ‘Silver Lining’s Play Book’ with Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper you will find a good example of A man like the Uncle lin Bradley Cooper’s Dad played by Robert Deniro. It’s one of my fav movies too. Also, I understand OCD as my Baba has developed it in her nineties. The thing about the door knob, my Baba does that everytime.

I watched it when it first came but can’t remember much of it. What a coincidence because this week I was asking my sister to get me the film. I would like to watch it again because I don’t feel I understood it or gave it much thought the first time. Thank you Mandi.

Great story very interesting. Hopefully when the little girl (or boy) grows up she will come to know that her uncle has OCD =)

Sometimes, repetition in older people is just out of habit: they have done the same thing, taken the same route etc. for so many years, it becomes almost almost automatic. As you quote in this interesting little story, Ameena, ‘it’s just his way of doing things’. Perhaps that is OCD, though I have never considered it so. Very thought-provoking. Well done. 🙂

Thank You Millie. Actually, your comment gave me a whole other perspective towards the story. It might have just been his way. 🙂

An interesting story, Ameena. I think Uncle Jim has a touch of OCD there. I wonder how long it will take her to work that out. 🙂

Uncle Jim seemed like the cooler older folk I would want to hang around. Plus he offers sweets ;).
