Stigma shame-

Stigma shame-

image

How much longer,
Does my heart have to bleed?
How far should my tears fall,
For you to believe?

Should I bottle my teardrops
And save them in jars?
Would it make you believe,
I can’t help that I cry?

Should I cut across my wrist,
Till it bleeds out words;
For you to believe,
Depression is not a choice?

Do you need me to scream,
Till my larynx turns hoarse?
Do you need me to defend,
My mental status?

Should I carve out my diary
Words, etched into stone?
So the whole world can witness
the turmoil- between heart and soul?

Do you think I don’t miss her
The girl I used to be?
Or that some nights I don’t wonder
What on earth led me to this?

You shamed me with your stigma;
You shamed me with your words;
You claim to not- believe in depression,
Well then, I don’t- need your validation.

***Dear You, this poem is dedicated to you. <3***

      1. I know. It’s really too bad. I take meds. If I don’t I’m extremely anxious, get depressed, super hyper, super irritated, and don’t fall asleep. I am almost positive I have adult ADHD, but it’s not confirmed.
        I have learned that depression and other mental health issues are health issues, just like physical health problems as well. Like wearing glasses, having diabetes, etc. It’s so unfortunate that depression is such a plague and there is a huge stigmatism attached to it.
        Hmmmmm.
        Have a great rest of the week Ameena.

      2. I just found out that a friend of ours that’s been struggling with depression tried to kill herself. I couldn’t believe it. I think she suffers this stigma. My son has Asperger’s syndrome and loves her so much. Just today he was saying things like, “I’m going to live in Heaven with Auntie Cris. She will go there first, but later I will live there with her.” It freaked me out. I really hope and pray for healing for her. I really do.
        And yes, we need to do our part. Thank you for doing yours Ameena.

  2. Today I came forward on my college FB page as a survivor of mental illness. Fuck the stigma. FYI my blog is now under the website laurietopin.com. Looking forward to seeing you there!
